On The Easel - New Beginnings Stalled!

"If I struggle with a painting, and find the wisdom at the time to know I'm struggling, it is because my inner child has been neglected. When I invite my inner child back into 'the picture' my struggling dissolves."    -Jim Pescott

This quote say's it all!  I was not going to post this painting again until I felt it was finished.  However, I got stuck on it....I sometimes hit a block when I'm  working on a piece.  It's close to being finished....yet, I know it needs more work and I each time I pick up the brush, load it with paint, I put it back down again.  Can't move forward, can't walk away from it.

*So, I will force myself to take the weekend off.....no painting, not even for 5 minutes.  I will stay out of the studio.  I will take some play time, get other tasks around the house completed and start fresh on Monday morning.

(Now the week, hasn't been a total loss, I started a Yoga class on Monday, I have been working on a sketch for the 4th painting in the teacup series.  I will post that one next week after I get the background in)

And WHO said painting this white rose again was going to be a fun challenge??!!!

Enjoy your weekend,

Laura Leeder

On The Easel - New Beginnings

"Each painting has a promise implicit in its beginnings – make the finished work fulfill that promise."    -Michael Nevin

I felt compelled to paint this set-up again, only slightly larger.  I've also made a few slight changes to the drawing....

Portrait Of A Lady, By Laura Leeder

The 2nd in my teacup series.  After a short trip to Kelowna, I am back in the studio today and managed to finish this painting.  Luck was with me, as the sun came out for a few brief moments, allowing me to photograph it.

On The Easel-Tea Cup Series #2, By Laura Leeder

"Let the beauty of what you love be what you do. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth."  -Rumi

Work in progress....very nearly done!

"Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it. Do something else to it."
  -Jasper Johns

The small size of this painting is preventing me from exploring color in my rose the way I envision it in my head.  So, I decided to start a new painting of this teacup and rose....slightly larger...9 1/4 x 11 1/2.

This slightly larger size of teacup and rose will give me a bit more of a "working" surface that will allow my glazes of color more room to diffuse across each petal.  Allowing me to add more definition.

Hence, my excuse for not completing the above painting yesterday.  I also worked on 2 other paintings that I have "in-progress", as well as selected another teacup still life to start working on later this week.

My goal for today...focus on completing the 1st teacup and rose painting. Secondly, go into town, specificaly to Morris Flowers and Overwaitee in search of 2 items I want to include in future teacup paintings. (it will be a surprise)

Stay tuned.....

On The Easel - Tea Cup Series #2, By Laura Leeder

"The simplicity of form, the drama of rich, intense colour, the joy of challenge, and the challenge of endurance... The piece, when it is over, is not what is made, but how it is made."   -Andrew Kuntz

I have not gotten as far along as I would have liked; between household chores and other sketching....this little painting has sat neglected.  I made an effort to spend some time working on it today and here is the results.  The size of this piece is 7 1/4 x 9 1/2.   Now I'm off to watch the Junior Hockey Championships....Go Canada Go!

After being out of the studio for over a week, I felt I needed to start with a simple composition.  In truth, painting the layered petal's of this white rose on such a small scale is anything but simple!  I will treat this as my "warm up" piece and see where it takes me.

Artfully yours,
