HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our Awareness of the seasons becomes more acute as we grow older.  When the barrenness of winter disappears with spring, the sweet essence of the blossoming buds and leaves on both flowers and trees, awakens our senses.

Then summer arrives, and we welcome the warmth of the sun and the longer days.  Our gratitude for the beauty of nature is enhanced when fall transforms the greenery of summer into the brilliancy of orange, red and, yellow colors.

Finally, the brightly decorated Christmas tree, with the pungent smell of pine and evergreen emanating throughout the house, causes us to welcome winter.  And we rejoice that the new year is coming.

And so the cycle is now complete, and we face a new beginning as we greet the new year.  The choices we have are infinite.  All the days of the year now passed are part of history.  But we gladly anticipate accepting the challenges that will come with this new year.

Our days are numbered.  Yet, the seasons will continue their yearly cycle throughout eternity.  But we, in the time allotted each of us, should commit ourselves to bettering our lives in the days ahead.  We mustn't give up.  Despite our mortality, we must with enthusiasm follow through, and make our resolutions realities.

Wishing you Health, Happiness and Prosperity in 2012

Merry Christmas from Laura Leeder

"Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."
  ~Calvin Coolidge, 1927

"I do my best work and have the most fun when I'm not sure exactly where I'm heading. The process of discovery is exhilarating."   Jill Cohen

Has it been over a week since my last post?  How time flies.....

I have been very busy in the last few days.  A little bit of painting, but, mostly....a whole lot of marketing, with a Christmas Party thrown in.

I will be at the Cherrybrook Farms Artisan & Crafters Market today with a selection of paintings, prints and notecards for sale.  We started the market in November and each week an artist or crafter has been sharing their creative process.

Today, is my turn and I've decided to share my mandala painting process.  I will demonstrate how I start each one and share a bit about my color choices and thought process.

If you are in the area.....stop by....my demo starts at 2pm and will last for a few minutes.  Afterwards, you are welcome to play!

Cherrybrook Farms is located at 2931 Hwy 3 (the fruit stand).

PS:  My Giclee Prints of Destiny's Guide will be ready for pick up this weekend.  I will post them for sale next week!

On The Easel - A Still Life With Pears

"The beauty is to create from simplicity a complex object that still looks simple but powerful."

Using DS Manganese Blue Hue, Ultramarine Blue and Amethyst Genuine, I've deepened the background colors.  I've chosen not to separate the upper portion of the painting from the table edge after all.

Amethyst Genuine ( a DS Primatek Color) is a beautiful rich, deep purple that contains mica.
It's a semi-transparent paint, slightly granular.  It has a full value range, great for creating depth and atmosphere.  I especially love the way the mica sparkles in the light....an unexpected, but pleasant surprise.

I am hoping the sun comes out for a while today, so that I can get a better photograph of this piece and of course....I hope to work on it some more today!

Artfully Yours,

On The Easel - Still life With Pears In Progress

"Each painting is a kind of discovery, a discovery of new forms, color relation, or balance in composition. With every painting completed, the artist may change his viewpoint to suit the discoveries made, making his vision many-sided."
     ~Robert Colquhoun

I managed to squeeze in a small amount of painting time yesterday and here is the result. The pears are almost complete, and I've added the first glazes of color to the flower.

I'm not sure what I'm goint to do with my background.  I've drawn a light pencil line a 1/4 of the way down the page and initially, I was planning to paint the backround above this line very dark, leaving the table top below it quite light.  I don't think I want to do that now, so I will leave this painting for a day or so and hopefully when I come back to it, I will know what to do!

I went out and bought a few christmas plants yesterday afternoon and I have started to unpack the decorations.  So that is todays project. (along with laundry and cleaning)

Enjoy your day,

On The Easel - Painting Pears

"Your vision, rather than just your seeing, displays a thousand or more possible paintings in the simplest things."     ~Andrew Baker

This simple still life of pears and a flower is a pleasant variation from my usual still life compositions.
Although simple, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be easier.   The challenge for me is going to be in painting an interesting mix of values in complimentary colors.

No chance to work on this painting today, as I will be at the Artisan and Crafters Market at Cherrybrook Farms with a selection of prints and notecards on display.

If you are in the area stop in and say hi.  Lot's of gift ideas for yourself or family and friends.

Have a great day!
