DIY Projects And Sprucing Up The Yard For Summer

If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.  ~Mary Engelbreit

Back deck and the start of Juniper removal, June 2015

This spring we moved from our Erickson acreage with a view of the Creston Valley into a "fixer upper" property in Creston.  Here is a sneak peak at our back yard and of few of the projects that we have been working on.

The yard has a charming relaxed feel with mature trees and landscaping and backs onto a quiet neighborhood.  We've replaced boards on the deck and repainted it in a mid-tone brown that compliments the newly painted window trim and soft yellow colour of the house.

We've started to remove many of the dead and overgrown junipers shrubs that lined the lower back yard and deck. These mature junipers are dead in the center and this dry mass of branches and twigs are a potential fire hazard.  These junipers also emit the most unpleasant odor!  Replacing them with hostas for now is a quick and inexpensive fix for the short term.  I will fill in between the hostas with the vinca vine below as it is a hardy vine that grows quickly and produces pretty purple flowers.

This variegated willow is a great landscape shrub.

These Rhododendrons were a real show stopper a few weeks ago.

Here are a few more plants that I'm adding for some extra colour and texture.

These fragrant Lillies add some much needed colour to the landscape

.

As does this new rose that produces showy blossoms in shades of orchid pink, peach and cream.

I love the way the petals change colours as they mature.

Cuttings from this purple smoke tree are great in floral arrangements.

This hardy yellow shrub rose will add a  pop of sunshine amidst all the greenery of the mature trees and shrubs.

Plus, Ginko Biloba, one of the oldest living tree species. I'm smitten with these yellow-green curly leaves.

And of course, peonies are a must!  No garden is complete without one or two of these old fashioned, fragrant beauties.  The shapely leaf and growth pattern of the peony bush itself adds an interesting element to the landscape long after the blossoms are spent.  (I also like to add them to my summer flower arrangements)

These deck chairs have seen a few colours and several moves.  They are looking a bit shabby.... I think it's time once again for a fresh coat of paint. This will protect them and add several more years of life.

Oh, but first, my little inspector needs a boost onto the deck!

Much better, don't you think?!  I so enjoy giving old pieces new life!

Time for a cup of tea and now maybe I can get back into the studio!
